How Trump Failed Americans In The Fight Against COVID-19

More than 60,000 people have died. More than 1 million people have been infected. The U.S. is currently the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic and has been for a while. Just two months ago on February 26th, President Donald Trump ensured the nation in his White House conference that the risk of the Coronavirus to the people was very low and that he had everything under control. So, what went wrong for America? And who is to be held responsible for the lost lives of 60,000 people and counting?

According to Donald Trump, it is definitely not his fault. “I don’t take responsibility at all,” said Trump in the Rose Garden on March 13. Constantly ignoring warnings, undermining the disease, and putting out false information, American people are paying the price for the incompetence of their president and his administration.

The U.S. was incredibly under-prepared despite early warnings from the World Health Organization to start social distancing and most importantly testings. Stated in the New York Times, the failure to test blinded the U.S. in the fight against COVID-19 as the country missed what could have been 60,000 Americans’ opportunity to survive. This was undoubtedly the consequence of the Trump administration’s ineptitude in dealing with an epidemic this large in scale. For example, the head of the Department of Health and Human Services which oversees the government’s public health response to the pandemic was suddenly replaced by Vice President Mike Pence in February – the crucial time which could have been used to push testings and prevent undetected community spreading. What’s more, Trump has followed his pattern of deflecting blame on others by suspending U.S. funding for W.H.O, saying the organization was slow in its response and that it was “China-centric.”

In addition, on March 29th, President Donald Trump was constantly boasting about the ratings of his news conferences, both on Twitter and in person. He compared his ratings to the numbers of “Bachelor’s finale” and “Monday Night Football.” It is baffling how such a thing can be a priority for the President of the United States when over 2,400 American lives had been lost at that point. It has to be emphasized how this makes the misinformation spewed by Trump in his conferences even more dangerous. When millions of people are listening to false information regarding a deadly pandemic, and especially when so many Americans are only listening to Trump and blindly following his words, this alone can paralyze any progress made in testings or vaccines by scientists and responsible authoritative figures.

It can clearly be seen that President Donald Trump is not qualified to handle such a serious issue like the COVID-19 pandemic. There is nothing anyone can do to change the past, but there are things Americans can do to better protect themselves and others around them. Begin by getting information from more accountable sources such as Dr. Anthony Fauci and the World Health Organization. Stop blindly following Trump.
